Trainings for Individuals and Organizations

Training is the generic term for continuous life learning. The purpose of training is to expand a person's possibilities by increasing knowledge and broadening his or her viewpoints.
 
Individual Trainings
  • Circles. This presentation teaches individuals with developmental disabilities to establish personal boundaries and communicate them to others.

Presentation time: 2 hours. Can be effective as a group team with housemates or workmates.

Family Trainings
  • Boundaries in Families: The Balance of Power. This program is an introduction to the stages of the family life cycle. It talks about the changes that all families face during their life span, highlighting challenges faced by families with developmentally disabled children. The presentation includes example of real-life cases demonstrating what happens when progress through the cycle becomes stalled and then released.

    Presentation time: 1.5 hours

  • Families, Grief, and Team Participation. This program discusses how grief can affect families after a member is diagnosed with a developmental disability. This presentation is useful to caregivers and supporters because it provides them with an understanding of interactions from the family's point of view. It also provides a structural suggestion for establishing working relationships with family members by establishing a defined and negotiated role in the family social system.

    Presentation Time: 4 hours (including 1.5 hours of interactive discussion)

Support Provider Training
The first four presentations are part of a series called Making Sense Out of Things.
  • Functional Emotional Development: Neglect, Resiliency, Recovery (1). This program is an introduction to the stages of functional emotional development. The presentation discusses unintended consequences when caregivers neglect to nurture functional emotional development or when the natural developmental process becomes stuck.

    Presentation Time: 2 hours

  • Cognitive Development (2). This program introduces the basic stages of intellectual growth. It discusses the consequences of delayed development on thinking. It talks about thinking distortions and repairs to distorted thoughts.

  • Social Development - Circles of Relationship and Social Distance(3). This program introduces the concept of social development from the individual and the group perspective. It discusses the consequences of stalled social development and the role of family and support system in unblocking and facilitating healthy growth.

  • Putting it All Together (4). This program summarizes the developmental information and integrates it into a comprehensive conceptualization of support for individuals with developmental disability. It focuses on the cognitive, emotional and social needs of people in the community using developmental, applied social science, and cognitive behavior therapy.

Presentation Time: 1.5 hours

  • Borderline Personality Disorder. This program introduces the characteristics of borderline personality disorder as they are defined in the DSM-IV and as they may appear in individuals who also have a developmental disability.

Presentation time: 1 hour

The expanded version of this program presents a more in-depth introduction to the characteristics of borderline personality disorder as they are defined in the DSM-IV and may appear in individuals who also have a developmental disability. It includes specific suggestions to family and supporters for environmental, behavioral, and interpersonal therapeutic strategies.

Presentation time: 2.5 hours

  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). This program introduces the general principles of CBT, demonstrates applications for individuals with developmental disability and gives examples with borderline personality disorder. This is a therapist level training.
